Public Education on the Decline

There have been various arguments as to the best way to educate America’s children and it has been going for over the past 50 years. Currently we are no longer the world’s leader in secondary education rankings. Records show that 20 years ago our country was ranked first compared to other industrialized countries, but recently we are ranked 21st out of 27 countries. Yet with this in mind we are ranked near the top in dollars spent on education. The National Center for Education Statistics indicates reading and mathematics scores showed no statistical difference from 1971 to 2008.

Increase in Class Size to 35

The worst fiscal crisis came over Chicago School Board since 1995 caused officials to grant schools to raise the class size up to 35 students for the next two years. To stop any chance of a teachers strike over pay, the board members are honoring the 4 percent pay raise that was promised to teachers and seven other school unions. This increase in value is at $135 million. All school board members unanimously approved every emergency measure brought before them to help plug the estimated $427 million deficit.

With this increase in class size, it could displace 2,700 teachers and 300 non-teachers. Both incoming Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis and outgoing President Marilyn Stewart stood together at the podium as Stewart railed against the class size increase, calling it “educational malpractice.” Lewis had urged the board to first cut expensive curriculum created by outside, high-stakes testing and a long line of pricey vendors and consultants.

The Digital Textbook Revolution

According to recent research, seven of ten students still prefer printed textbooks over eBooks. Even though many students have iPhones and Blackberries, they still prefer to read out of the printed textbooks. They found that more than half of the students said they “were unsure about purchasing digital textbooks or would not consider buying them even if they were available.” New innovations usually take some time before their audience embraces it so currently it many not be something students prefer, but in the future it could be the next big thing.

Students’ reluctance to embrace digital books doesn’t mean they’re not reading other content on their web-ready mobile devices. Forty-one percent of students said they “regularly” access reading materials from the BlackBerries, iPhones, and similar devices, according to the NACS survey.
